Keeping up his ‘weak’ prime minister tirade, NDA’s prime ministerial candidate LK Advani on Friday said he “pitied” Manmohan Singh “who was not in control of his own government” and challenged him to contest Lok Sabha elections to prove his worth. Advani hit out at the Centre for discriminating against Gujarat and the latter’s failure to pass the GujCoc.

“People ask me why I target Manmohan Singh. He is a good man. I am not happy doing so, in fact, I am pained. I used to have a lot of respect for him but now I pity him as circumstances are out of his control. I cannot say this government is Manmohan Singh’s government,” Advani said at a rally at Kankaria on Friday evening, kicking off his campaign in Gujarat.

Advani and Manmohan have been involved in a war of words over the past few days with the former calling the PM weak. Manmohan in turn said Advani had failed to prevent demolition of the Babri Mosque as well as the attack on parliament and the 2002 riots when he was home minister.

Advani also raked up the issue of Singh not having contested elections. “The PM should gather courage and announce that he will enter the parliament not through the Rajya Sabha,” said Advani, adding that if the NDA came to power, the government would amend the Constitution and make it mandatory for the prime minister to be from the Lok Sabha.

Speaking at the rally attended by the BJP’s LS candidates from Gujarat, Advani said the UPA government has failed on all fronts. “Suicide by farmers are at a record high, terrorists strike with impunity and no one is caught, price rise is squeezing the aam aadmi, this government has totally failed,” he said.

Pointing to the government’s failure on the security front, Advani said, “The NDA government had given Gujarat a special coastal package of Rs400 crore but all that the UPA gave the state was a paltry Rs50 crore.”
