The ‘chirayu’ trend seems to have returned to the Marathi film and television circle. It was in 1993, when the Marathi New Year’s eve was celebrated the English way for the first time.

On the eve of Gudi Padwa on Thursday, after a gap of almost a decade, the who’s who of the Marathi film and television industry were again seen celebrating by dancing, drinking and having fun. And the word ‘chirayu’ (cheers) was heard a hundred times.

Though the concept of celebrating the Marathi New Year’s eve was first thought of by noted scriptwriter Mangesh Kulkarni, it is now being made popular by others.

“I thought of this concept to promote the Marathi New Year. It was similar to that of the English New Year, but with more Marathi flavour. I organised the parties till 1998 which were attended by big names in Marathi film circles — such as Nana Patekar and Vikram Gokhale. However, I had to discontinue the trend due to financial constraints. Now, I am not a part of it, but I organise an entertainment programme at Yashwantrao Chavan Natyagruha by the name ‘Chaitrachahool’ which is also quite popular,” said Kulkarni.

Noted actor-director Vinay Apte organised the ‘chirayu’ party at Aarey gardens in Goregaon. Apte said that he was a part of the first party in 1993. “This party is only for those who work in the Marathi film and television industry. It is similar to the English New Year parties. However, our attempt is to keep the Marathi flavour alive,” said Apte.

Another big bash to welcome the Marathi New Year was organised at Mumbai cricket association club in Bandra-Kurla complex by a group of young Marathi artistes. Actors Rahul Mehendale and Sushant Shelar, who were among the chief organisers, said that they would be felicitating senior make-up man Krishna Borkar on the occasion.

“There is no animosity between us and other organisers. We are organising this party under the banner of Sangharsh,” said the actors.
