A local BJP leader has been arrested for allegedly raping his daughter for the last seven years.
After Mumbai’s horror dad, it’s Amritsar’s Ashok Taneja. The 40-year-old shopkeeper was arrested at Ajnala town late on Wednesday night for allegedly sexually assaulting his daughter for the past eight years.
Rajwinder Singh, investigating officer in the case, said: “We received a complaint from the victim on Wednesday. She mustered the courage to tell her relatives about her sexual exploitation after reading the Fritzl and Mumbai cases. A case of rape has been registered against the accused.”
Taneja, who is reportedly the general secretary of the BJP unit in Ajnala, said he was being falsely implicated due to a family dispute. Punjab BJP president Rakesh Bhandari said Taneja had nothing to do with the party.
“He had never been an office-bearer of the BJP,” he said.
In her complaint to the police, the victim said she had been repeatedly raped by Taneja in the past eight years. “My father should not be spared. He should be shot dead,” the victim, who is a student of Guru Nanak Dev University, told reporters on Thursday.
The incident comes close on the heels of the arrest of a Mumbai businessman on charges of raping his daughter for nine years.
The Ajnala victim said her father threatened to kill her whenever she opposed him and also warned her of dire consequences if she complained to anyone. She said her father exploited her whenever she was alone in the house. The victim is now staying with her maternal uncle in Amritsar. “She is disturbed and still afraid to speak against her father,” the victim’s cousin said.
A senior police officer said the girl’s mother said she suspected that there was “something fishy” between her husband and daughter, but could not imagine that it would be rape. The victim was accompanied to the police station by her mother.
Though doctors examining Taneja found him to be normal, he has been kept under observation at the Ajnala Government Hospital. He was admitted on Thursday after he complained of uneasiness and a heart problem.
