A housing society with residents like hockey player Dhanraj Pillai and Maharashtra assembly speaker Babasaheb Kupekar has agreed to pay the dues to the tune of Rs 1.24 crore to the BMC, which had earlier threatened to auction the building for non-payment of property tax.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stayed the auction on Tuesday after residents of Kingston building at Hiranandani complex in suburban Powai paid Rs 25 lakh.

"Residents have agreed to clear the dues. They have paid Rs 25 lakh on Tuesday and have agreed to pay the remaining amount within a month. We have for the time being stayed the auction and extended the time period by another month," said a BMC official.

"So far, the society has paid Rs 80 lakh in four installments for sewerage and water taxes to the BMC but have not paid the dues and penalty," he said.

The BMC had decided to auction the building for non-payment of property tax amounting to Rs 1.24 crore.

The residents, however, said they have already paid the dues, a claim refuted by the civic body.

"As per our laws the occupier has to pay the amount directly to us, not to the builder," said RB Aarote, superintendent of BMC's assessment department.

After much effort, the residents managed to get the auction postponed for another month.
