Poll code dries up AMC water supply plan

The electoral code of conduct has put on hold various work of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. This summer, citizens may not get additional water supply from the AMC due to the electoral code of conduct. The AMC officials will have to seek election officers' permission to announce additional hour of water supply.

"Elected wing cannot take any decision on announcing additional hour of water supply. That would happen only if municipal commissioner takes election commission's permission to give orders," added the source.

Similarly, the material management department is also in dilemma to give away pair of shoes to lower grade employees.

The department gives away pair of shoes to these employees after every two years.
"Such decisions cannot be taken during departments' committee meeting due to the electoral code of conduct. So we have passed asked the standing committee to give Rs500 in place of pair of shoes to 4,083 employees," said a source.

Every year the AMC officials orders shoes from the same company. Now the standing committee will decide whether they want to sanction the amount.

Some of the other programmes in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation have also been stalled because of code of conduct. Before the code of conduct was implemented the AMC had sanctioned around Rs200 crore works in just two meetings in two weeks.
