From finding out the latest buzz on campus, the coolest places to hang out to listening to popular lectures, now all this will be a click away for students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.

A group of five students recently kickstarted IIT-B’s very own campus radio, a web-based LAN radio which aims at catering to the interests of the institute students and faculty.

“The shows will include campus, city, national and international news, music, reviews of websites, information on books to read, gadgets, movies to watch, places and restaurants to hang out and extra-curricular activities. The shows will be a good balance of information and entertainment,” said Rajat Chakravarty, student in-charge of campus radio.

Besides interviews of faculty, alumni, security guards and mess workers, one segment called ‘travelogues’ will have students talking about places where they have interned or about interesting holiday destinations.

“A special features segment will air popular lectures by experts or interesting sessions like a ‘hasya kavi sammelan’, which have being held at IIT-B,” he said.

Institute bands could also use this platform to make themselves heard.

The team claims that the best feature about the radio is that anyone at IIT-B can host a show or address listeners.
While the idea was being mulled over for a couple of years, preparations to actually launch the radio started a few months back.

“We did a detailed analysis on what people on campus would like to hear, language preferences and the frequency of the shows.
Subsequently, we got the necessary permissions from our faculty in January and aired the first show this week,” said Chakravarty. The one-hour pilot show had institute news bulletin, travelogue and website reviews, among others. Results of an inter-hostel radio play competition, to be judged by professional radio jockeys, will be announced next week.

Currently, shows are being run thrice a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). Polls are being conducted to gauge the interest of the listeners. Posted on the IIT-B gymkhana website, it also has a live chat to get instant feedback from listeners. “For instance, some students told us that there were technical problems which we fixed. Some have told us that a lot of English is being used and that we must use Hindi as well,” said Chakravarty.
