A 35-year-old man who went missing from Versova was found murdered near the Khandala highway. Shahid Khan, a businessman, went missing on March 15. His body was found a day later. The Lonavala city police, who are investigating the case, said that Khan was strangled to death.

Police suspect that the accused blackmailed Khan and used his credit card for shopping worth Rs1.20 lakh. Fearing that Khan would report the matter to the police, they took him out of the city and murdered him.

According to the police, Khan supplied furniture for film shootings. Khan had left home on Sunday afternoon, but when he did not return home till late in the day, and his mobile remained switched off, his wife Nigar began frantically calling his friends and relatives to know about his whereabouts. Nigar finally lodged a missing complaint with the Versova police on Monday morning.

While investigating, the Versova police learnt that Khan’s credit card was being used at various places in the suburbs, including the busy Alfa showroom in Irla, Andheri. “As the credit card was being used, we were hoping that he was alive and had not faced any untoward incident,” said a senior police officer from Versova police station.

“We have registered a murder case and a police team has been sent to Mumbai for further investigations,” SV Darekar, senior police inspector, Lonavala.
