“The healthcare sector in India is growing fast, and the scene in Gujarat is equally promising,” said VN Shah, vice president, Zydus Cadila, while speaking at the pre-launch seminar of International Institute of Bio-medical Informatics here on Sunday.

Shah, also a leading diabetologist, said there were many new medical colleges and institutions coming up in the state. He said, “There are about seven new medical colleges coming up in the state and it means an increase in the number of seats as well.”

International Institute of Bio-medical Informatics is an institute which seeks to offer a
pathway programme to students who have completed Masters of Science, Information Technology, MBBS or BDS degrees. Students who join the programme will be able to start the post-graduate programme in India and can finish it in University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). Similarly, the students can begin the post-graduate programme and finish that in MS Biomedical Informatics, PhD in Biomedical informatics and post-baccalaureate level certificate programme in healthcare informatics in UMDNJ.

Talking about the employment options available to students after they join the programme, UMDNJ Dean Dr Syed Haque said, “In Canada and the US, there is scarcity of people who specialise in bio-informatics.” Haque also said that lot of research was being done in the field and information and new knowledge were generated.

Former professor of IIT, Dinesh Mittal said that although the courses offered in the programme were recession-prone, jobs in healthcare were still assured.

He said, “The prospective employers will be pharmaceutical companies, hospitals and bio-medical equipment manufacturers. In healthcare, one would get more salary than what software professionals get, at least more than Rs45,000.”

Dipal Pandya, director of the institute, was also present on the occasion.

The institute will also offer customized programmes for pharmaceutical executives and researchers as per their requirements. Bio-medical informatics is a discipline which is related to the study and application of computer science, information science, informatics, cognitive science and human-computer interaction in practise of biological research, biomedical science and healthcare.
