After reaching a seat sharing agreement, Shiv Sena has decided to contest the Nashik seat while BJP will file nomination from Dindori which is a reserved (ST) seat.

However, top Sena leaders from the district were conspicuous by their absence during the procession of Shiv Jayanti celebration. While many thought their absence was because of the election code of conduct, political observers believe it was an evidence of the infighting the party had seen in the district.

Earlier, the name of Sunil Bagul, district joint relations leader, was running strong for the seat. But district chief Datta Gaikwad’s name started making rounds later. Sources say Bagul is a stronger candidate and enjoys the goodwill of the local activists.

Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Saturday said that the candidates for different constituencies are being finalised and their names will be announced soon. “We have indicated to the probable candidates to start working in some places,” said Raut. On the issue of support to Sharad Pawar as the candidate for the post of prime minister, Raut said, “We are in favour of a candidate from Maharashtra, but we also believe that one who is eligible for the post should only become the prime minister.”
