Hola Mohalla has once again brought differences among Sikhs to the fore. The last time, Sikhs were divided over the day on which to observe Guru Granth Sahib’s “gurudom”. This time they are disagreeing on a common date on which to celebrate Hola Mohalla.
The Nihangs, a marshal sect among the Sikhs, have decided to hold separate Hola Mohalla celebrations on March 12, and not on March 11, as decided by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandak Committee (SGPC).

At a meeting in Anandpur Sahib over a dozen Nihang organisations struck a defiant note saying they would celebrate Hola Mohalla in accordance with the Bikrami calendar. Traditionally, the festival is celebrated a day after Holi, which falls on a full moon (poornima) day.

But the SGPC, which now follows the Nanakshahi calendar, announced that both Holi and Hola Mohalla would be celebrated on March 11.

Hola Mohalla is special to the Nihangs, as they display their martial arts and other skills at Anandpur Sahib.

A Nihang chief announced on March 9 that the SGPC had wrongly declared March 11 as Hola Mohalla. All Nihang groups will start their rally on March 12 from Shaheedi Bagh and march towards Takht Sri Kesgarh gurdwara.

But Takht Sri Kesgarh jathedar Giani Tarlochan Singh said the SGPC had no reservations over Nihangs celebrating Hola Mohalla on March 12.
