Terming the situation in Sri Lanka as "very grim", the CPI on Sunday, asked the government to stop all military aid to Colombo and ask the Rajapakse government to stop the war and come out with a political package.

"The situation is very grim. It is a huge humanitarian catastrophe. Large number of people are dying of starvation and lack of proper medical care with the war against LTTE intensifying every day," CPI national secretary D Raja said.

Demanding that the Rajapakse government stop the war, he asked the government to tell Colombo to come out with a political package, "which meets the legitimate aspirations of the Sri Lankan Tamils, which are genuine and historic."

He said India should stop all kinds of military assistance, offensive and defensive, to check the impression in the minds of people that New Delhi was helping Sri Lankan government in the war.

Referring to DMK and PMK, he said these parties should share the responsibility of the UPA government's policies on the matter.

"They are part of the UPA coalition at the centre, which is taking a disastrous policy towards Sri Lankan Tamils. What is the point (for DMK-PMK) crying hoarse in Tamilnadu?"

Maintaining that UN and other foreign agencies have already pointed towards the major problems facing the Tamil population in Sri Lanka, he accused the Rajapakse government of not heeding to international opinion but only seeking military solution.

"The UPA government will also be accused of letting down the Sri Lankan Tamils and betraying there cause," Raja said.
