Wildlife experts are fuming over recent decisions made by the Maharashtra State Wildlife Board (SWB), alleging that the board has been acting against the interests of wildlife.

The board met hurriedly on February 20, without prior notice to members and without issuing an agenda.

Forests minister Babanrao Pachpute chaired the meeting in which the board cleared three disputed de-notification proposals. The board cleared the denotification of 8,148.78 sq km of the Great Indian Bustard (GIB) sanctuary in Solapur district.

“The sanctuary will now be confined to only 347.66 sq km. The SBW also de-notified Jayakwadi sanctuary,” said Kishor Rithe, president, Satpuda Foundation, an NGO working for wildlife conservation in central India.

“We had already stated that the part of Solapur city mistakenly included in the sanctuary notification should be deleted and no other potential GIB habitat from Nannaj sanctuary should be touched.”

The area to be deleted was not compensated by notifying an equal area as sanctuary, he added.

Principle chief conservator of forests (wildlife), B Majumdar, said, “The sanctuary was declared to preserve grass land ecology and there is no need to compensate. We had taken care of the loss by declaring Karan Sohol sanctuary in Yavatmal district.”
