Petty quarrels can sometimes lead to big fights. But this one takes the, well, nose.

Two women, sisters-in-law in a family that lives in Andheri (West), got into an argument which eventually resulted in one woman biting off a part of the nose of the other. Mildred, 24, in a fit of anger, allegedly attacked her sister-in-law Elena, 32, and left her severely injured.

Elena and her mother Olive D’souza, 62, were to leave for Nasik for some festive occasion last week. They were going to take Mildred’s two-year-old daughter with them. But Elena and Mildred got into a fight about something trivial, which led to Mildred biting Elena on the nose,

Olive said, adding: “She also pulled Elena’s hair. The whole thing happened when my son Milton, Mildred’s husband, had gone down to fetch an autorickshaw for us to leave in.”

Elena said: “The fight intensified when my mother came to my rescue. Mildred allegedly attacked her with blows. It stopped only after Milton returned and broke up the fight.” Neighbours helped take Elena to Criticare Hospital.

“I was not at home when the incident took place, but my mother called and informed me about it,” Elena’s older brother, Liston said. “Elena was admitted for three days in the hospital, and her nose was fixed by surgically grafting skin from other parts of her body to the nose.”

The entire family used to live together at Shivalaya Tower in Veera Desai Road in Andheri (W). “After the incident, Milton did not even rush his sister to hospital, but just left,” Liston said. “But I will fight the case to its logical conclusion because the incident has ruined my sister’s looks.” (DNA tried to contact Milton but he was unavailable for comment).

The Amboli police have recorded Elena’s statement while she was in hospital, and registered a case against Mildred. PSI S Shaikh of the Amboli police said: “We registered a case against Mildred under Section 324 of the IPC, and arrested her. She was produced in court on February 25, where she was granted judicial custody by the court. She was later released on bail.”
