Guj Govt continues crackdown on medical practitioners

The health officials continued the crackdown across the state on doctors violating norms of safe medical practice, disposal of bio-medical waste and on bogus medical practitioners.

The health officials continued the crackdown across the state on doctors violating norms of safe medical practice, disposal of bio-medical waste and on bogus medical practitioners following the hepatitis outbreak in Sabarakantha which has till now claimed 53 lives.

The state health department, food and drugs department and local district authorities have been working in tandem conducting inspection of clinics of private medical
practitioners, raiding scrap dealer in search of bio-medical wastes and identifying fake doctors operating in various regions.

The State government that swung into action following the hepatitis outbreak in the Sabarkantha district, mainly in Modasa taluka, has till date filed police complaints against more than 20 doctors and booked more than 50 fake doctors and touts for operating without proper licenses.

They continued their inspection today in various district including Bharuch, Patan, Modasa, Ahmedabad, Dahod, Anand. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) health officials have so far filed police complaints against eight doctors under the Medical Practitioners Act, sealed 35 clinic for improper disposal of bio-medical waste and issued 461 notice to doctors across the city. 

The AMC health officials on Saturday cracked down on one more godown of a company in the city which used to recycle bio-medical waste, health officials said.     They have also sealed five godown of scrap dealers after they recovered over 50 tonne of bio-medical waste, including used syringes, needles and IV kits.

The officials have identified two more scrap dealers in Asarwa area, who are involved in recycling of bio-medical waste and initiated action against them. In Bharuch, the district health officials said that they are conducting searches on clinics of private doctors and
local scrap dealers.

They said that a team of health officials from Gandhinagar have also arrived to take stock of the situation. According to Bharuch district officials, they had arrested 27 fake doctors and touts who were later released on bail.

In Dahod, the health officials have booked five touts as the inspections of private clinic and scrap dealers continued. In Vadodara officials have lodged police complaints
against 22 doctors yesterday for practising medicine without licence.

Meanwhile, an ordinance is likely to be introduce to bring private medical practitioners in the state under regulatory mechanism. Meanwhile, the State Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas said that under the ordinance it would become mandatory for the
medical practitioners to maintain proper record of their patients along with their contact details.

The medical practitioners will also be required to maintain record of patient with details of nature of disease, diagnoses, treatment prescribed, brief medical history along
with medical reports, he said, adding that the ordinance will bring the medical practitioners under legal obligations. 

Meanwhile, the Health Department has filed cases against 13 doctors in Modasa town, rural and in Dhansura taluka of Sabarkantha district. One Dr Govind Pate and his son Chintan Patel have been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, after
the investigations in the hepatitis cases revealed that many of the patients who were infected with the liver disease had been treated by Patel in the past six months.

The health department has sealed Patel's clinic after collecting sample inside it. According to police, Patel and his son are absconding and have not been arrested.
