Noted theatre artiste Dr Laxman Deshpande passes away

Renowned theatre artiste, popularly known as 'Waehadkar' among Marathi theatre circles, passed away following a prolonged illness.

Renowned theatre artiste, popularly known as 'Waehadkar' among Marathi theatre circles, passed away in the wee hours of Monday following a prolonged illness.

He was 66. He is survived by wife Vijaya, two sons and daughters-in-law. He was cremated on Monday afternoon at the Pushpanagri crematorium . His mono act in Marathi play, Warhad nighalaye London la gave him international repute and his name was entered the Guinness Book of World Records for his record performance in India and abroad. Warhad was written, directed and acted by the name of Dr Deshpande.

He played 52 roles in the play. Dr Deshpande was suffering from liver ailment and diabetes. He was admitted to a private hospital last Tuesday. He presented the Warhad United States, England, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Canada, Muscat, Qatar, Kuwait and Nigeria.

Born on December 5, 1943, he worked as Head of Dramatics Department in Dr Bababsaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University.

After a voluntary retirement from the University's post in 2000, he was unanimously elected as the president of the Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Natya Sammelan held in Parbhani in the same year. Dr Deshpande was the recipient of many awards including the Acharya Atre award, Purushottam Karandak, Sayaji Maharaj award, Sahitya Samrat award, Alfa TV award.

He also wrote a book on his mono act play. Besides, he wrote Aksharnad and a book on Maulana Azad. 

Chief minister Ashok Chauhan's condolence message, was read by deputy collector DM Mungnikar.

The fraternity of drama and literature personalities including RR Borade, Shahikant Burhanpurkar, Jayant Mahajan, Ajit Dalvi, former MLC Shrikant Joshi, Devdatt Mhatre, Sudhir Rasal, Ram Bhogle, Nath Neralkar, Jayant Shwetekar, Vikas Raimane, Dhananjay Lambe, Chandrashekar Baktul and others were present at the funeral.
