The fire brigade officials on Thursday fished out the body of constable Dilip Vanand who committed suicide on Wednesday by jumping into the Sabarmati after an undertrial prisoner he was escorting escaped his custody.

Vanand’s decomposed body bore cut marks on the face and was recovered from a spot near Patang restaurant which is close to Nehru bridge, the place from where he had jumped.

JM Desai, senior PI at Navrangpura police station, said, “We have filed a complaint in this connection.”

Vanand and head constable, Pursottam Prajapati, were returning to Mehsana from Rajkot in a state transport bus. They were bringing along Nirmal Sinh alias Rajendra Sinh Jadeja, accused in the loot, murder and riot cases.

On reaching Ahmedabad they got off near Paldi bus stop and went to Honest restaurant to have dinner. But Jadeja managed to give them a slip and escaped on a scooter that was arranged for the purpose.

Sources said Vanand did not have a good track record in the police department. He was earlier posted with Ahmedabad police but was transferred to Mehsana after a convict escaped his custody.

The recent incident was the second of its kind under his supervision and it is believed that he committed suicide because of depression. The Navrangpura police also recovered a bag from Nehru bridge that contained Vanand’s identity card, shawl, sleeping mat, rifle belt and t-shirt.

Family loses sole breadwinner

The family of Dilip Vanand, the constable who committed suicide on Wednesday, was inconsolable after they saw his decomposed body. Vanand is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

Unable to believe that her father was no more, Anjali, the 16-year-old daughter of the deceased, screamed at the police  personnel and stopped them from even touching the body.

“My father never scolded me. I was like a son  to him,” said Anjali. She also said she had failed in her class X board examinations twice and that her father had promised to gift her an Activa if she cleared it this time.

When the police personnel tried picking up the keys recovered from Vanand’s pocket, Anjali shouted saying it belonged to her father and stopped them from taking it away.
The relatives of the family present at Vanand’s residence in Shahpur said that his wife Vandana was grief-stricken and that his death was a great loss to the family as he had been the only earning member.

Vanand’s son Karthik, 18, was so struck by the tragedy that he refused to talk to media persons. But, his relatives said he had completed his studies and was looking for a job.
