Later, the constable reportedly committed suicide by jumping from Nehru bridge into Sabarmati. The police have recovered a bag from the spot near the Nehru bridge.
According to police sources, head constable Pursottam Prajapati and constable Dilip Vanand were returning to Mehsana from Rajkot along with Nirmal Sinh alias Rajendra Sinh Jadeja, a notorious criminal involved in loot, murder and rioting cases. They alighted from a state transport bus at Paldi bus stop on Tuesday night and took a rickshaw to Honest Restaurant for dinner.
After dinner, Prajaptai went to wash his hands while Vanand was sitting with Jadeja. Getting a chance, Jadeja pushed Vanand and escaped with the help of a motorcyclist who was waiting outside the restaurant.
Vanand reportedly chased Jadeja in a motorcycle which was parked outside the restaurant while Prajapati chased him in a police patrolling van which was passing through the area. However, Jadeja managed to escape.
Later, Navrangpura police received a message from fire control that a person has committed suicide by jumping from the Nehru bridge. When the police reached the spot, they found a bag. Navrangpura PI, JM Desai said, “We have recovered a bag from the spot containing Vanand’s police identity card, a shawl, a sleeping mat, rifle belt and a T-shirt.”
However, Desai refused to say anything on the apprehension that Vanand had committed suicide.
Sources also said that Vanand and Prajapati were in contact till 1 am. Thereafter, Vanand’s mobile was found switched off. Fire brigade officials are conducting a search operation to trace Vanand’s body.
