In order to create awareness among investors and provide additional facilities to Gujarat investors, who have a major share in equity markets, Bombay Stock Exchange Training Institute (BTI) launched an online certification in Gujarati, in Ahmedabad on Saturday.

The derivative module was launched in the presence of Ashok Bhatt, Speaker, Gujarat Assembly, who was chief guest at the function. The online certification on derivatives under BSE’s Certification on Financial Markets (BCFM) is aimed at helping a large number of market participants, including brokers, retail investors and other intermediaries who hail from Gujarat.

“Securities market is not only about equity. With the arrival of new products in the financial world, the term is getting wider in meaning. Gujarat contributes significantly to security market and so the BSE decided to come up with module of derivatives, which is made mandatory by the Sebi to be passed by any market intermediary,” said ML Soneji, chief operating officer, BSE. He said the exchange is planning other modules too in Gujarati and the process for the same is already on. Among others, capital market and compliance modules are expected to be introduced by March 31, 2009.

According to MS Sahoo, whole-time director, Sebi, development of knowledge infrastructure is highly required in the Indian context as it has not kept pace with institutional infrastructure. “It is important that intermediaries understand trading products in their mother language, especially when the complexity of these products is on rise. “The national integration of security market is possible only when the products creating awareness and imparting knowledge are available in different languages so that there are no geographical barriers and all participants have level-playing field,” said Sahoo.
