Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi took on Congress icons on Sunday, saying promoting one family was a danger to the future of the country. “Members of the Gandhi-Nehru family have ruled the country for 37 years. If the past five years are also taken into account, it would be a 42-year rule,” he said.

“Ek parivar ke ateet ko age badhane ke liye jo shadayantra chal raha hai usse Hindustan ke bhavishya ko khatra hai (the conspiracy to promote one family’s past is posing danger to the future of the country),” Modi said. With Manmohan Singh being an “invisible” prime minister, it was “power without accountability” for the family, he alleged.

Addressing the party’s national council meeting, Modi gave a new spin to Barack Obama’s victory,  claiming it was a result of American citizens being fed up with the stranglehold of a few families in politics.  “It was senior Bush... followed by two terms of Bill Clinton and then two terms of junior Bush and then there was the possibility of another Clinton.”

Modi said, in India “only one family has ruined everything” and the “people are badly wanting to get away from a family as they want freedom from the family”. Earlier, Modi came in for high praise, with Advani comparing him to former PM AB Vajpayee.
