From a forgettable two seats last year, the Congress-backed National Student Union of India (NSUI) has made an impressive comeback in Gujarat University senate elections.
This year, it has won four seats, same as the number of seats won by BJP’s student wing Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Moreover, NSUI has also managed to win support of one of the two independent candidates, who won unchallenged.

The result of GU court (senate) election, was announced on Tuesday.

The court has 10 seats this year after the seat of engineering faculty was cancelled as it was merged with Gujarat Technological University (GTU). While remaining two seats — medical dnd Dental faculties — went to the independent candidates, who won unchallenged.

These two seats are still a matter of discord as both the unions are laying a claim on them. ABVP claims that the candidate Ashish Brahmbhatt, who won unchallenged from Medical faculty, is on their side, while NSUI claims that both the winning independent candidates are with them.

Vishal Patel, who won the Dental faculty seat, has since confirmed that he is supporting NSUI and his victory belongs to them. Ashish Brahmbhatt, however, is yet to confirm anything and was unavailable for comments.

So as of now, NSUI holds the upper hand in the election results.

The candidate supported by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) lost with a heavy margin.

“It’s a fifty-fifty senate and we accept the results. But we lost because our focus was on other, more important issue. Throughout the year, we were working on the campaign against Bangladeshi infiltration, while our counterparts were busy focusing on winning the election,” said Chirag Patel, state head of ABVP.

“We have won and our candidates performed according to the plan,” said Sarju Ganatra, state vice-president of NSUI.

Ravi Desai (ABVP) won the under-graduate commerce faculty seat with the highest election margin of 438 votes. The other AVBP candidates who won are - Piyush Mehta (post graduate science), Apurva Mehta (post-graduate commerce) and Samar Desai (law). Winning candidates supported by NSUI — Rushabh Pandya (under-graduate science), Rajendra Singh Gohil (education), Dhaval Singh Vaghela (under-graduate arts) and Vinod Vadher (post-graduate arts).  More on P4
