The moral policing virus is fast spreading. After the Sri Rama Sene in Mangalore, it is Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot who thinks that pub and mall culture is corrupting young girls and boys, “who roam hand in hand”.

Blaming the previous Vasundhara Raje-led BJP government in the state for promoting the “sale and consumption of liquor”, the chief minister said on Wednesday that the cabinet had rightly decided to close down 800 Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) shops in the state.

“Every street and every city has big liquor shops with big signboards and there are shops close to schools and religious places. The previous BJP government had pushed youth towards pub culture and boys and girls [were] roaming round in malls holding hands. I want to end this culture,” Gehlot told reporters.

He said the BJP government had encouraged liquor culture by allowing huge hoardings of liquor companies across the state, which harmed the social and cultural values. The Congress government would curb such an ad campaign to keep the young generation away from it.
