This event promises to be one wonderful treat for all music lovers in the city. This year at its annual Janfest, St Xavier’s has lined up some of the leading names in Indian classical music who are all set to stir the event with some soulful music. While the college will be celebrating its 140th year anniversary, Janfest will be marking its 35th year.

To listen to some soothing music, you can join the crowd to watch Ustad Nishat Khan playing dexterously on the sitar — he is the son and disciple of Ustad Imrat Khan.

Also performing will be Kishori Amonkar. Indeed, she needs no introduction to classical music aficionados as she has wowed audiences in India and abroad. Music lovers will remember how she was groomed by  her great mother  Moghubai Kurdikar.

Janfest is an initiative of the Indian Music Group, a music library that is run by a group of music enthusiasts in the college. Under its initiative, students and outsiders who are interested in Indian classical music can join the library and listen to the collection of songs by popular musicians. The group is run by 11 students and 90 volunteers organise  monthly concerts also, which culminate in the Janfest. Sonali Gupta, secretary of the group says, “Today most youngsters in college are interested in contemporary music, often experimenting with scores across genres. As an initiative to inculcate the passion for Hindustani classical music, we started this venture in 1973.”

Janfest is one of the events on campus that is attended by a lot of ex-Xavierites.
According to Sonali, ex-student Vidya Balan has been an avid supporter of the event, while you can also perhaps rub shoulders with Juhi Chawla here.
