The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has suggested that the government immediately attach properties of Satyam Computers and protect jobs of its employees.

"Instead of a bailout package for Satyam, the Government of India could attach properties of the beleaguered company and save the jobs of employees," CPM politburo member Seetaram Yechuri has said.

He said eight companies promoted by B Ramalinga Raju were already under scrutiny after the scandal in Satyam Computers came to light.

"If properties of these companies are confiscated, the jobs of employees can be saved," he felt.

Replying to a question, Yechuri said political nexus was obvious in the Maytas Infra affair. "The question as to why the Y S Rajasekhara Reddy favoured only one company and entrusted multi-crore rupee contracts is very legitimate. The government and the ruling Congress party should answer this ques tion," he said.

Referring in particular to the Rs 12,210 crore Hyderabad Metro Rail Project that was handed over to the Maytas-led consortium, Yechuri pointed out that a person of the stature of E Sreedhar an, the Delhi Metro chief, raised several questions related to the land deals and other aspects.

"He withdrew from the HMR project after he smelt something fishy. Now, Maytas projects are under a great cloud of suspicion and they certainly merit a detailed investigation," he added.

Referring to suggestions that Maytas started growing under the previous Telugu Desam Party regime, the CPM leader wondered what prevented the Congress from taking any action in the last four-and-a-half years.

"If something was wrong during TDP's time, the Congress government could have initiated action. But nothing of that sort happened," he pointed out.

CPM state secretariat member Y Venkateswara Rao was also present.
