As part of efforts to improve medical infrastructure ahead of the Commonwealth Games, the Delhi Government will upgrade facilities in all the hospitals run by it in the city.

Delhi Health and Family Welfare minister Kiran Walia said a detail plan of action is being finalised to improve infrastructure in the Government-run hospitals ahead of the prestigious event.

"We are planning to upgrade the facilities at the hospitals to ensure an efficient health care system ahead of the Commonwealth Games," Walia told PTI here.

She said upgradation of facilities will also ease the pressure on the two big hospitals -- All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Safdarjung Hospital.

In both these hospitals, between 5,000 to 6,000 patients attend the daily OPDs.

Walia said her department was also taking initiatives to expedite recruitment of medical and paramedical personnel to overcome their shortage in the hospitals. "We are going to recruit more doctors."

"We are also planning to improve the ratio of beds in hospitals," she said.

The government is also likely to constitute a Para-medical Council to overcome shortage of para-medical staff.

he Council may impart training in number of para-medical subjects.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, in a review meeting of the Health department recently, had asked the officials to strengthened existing network of 195 dispensaries.

Dikshit while stressing on the need for proper maintenance of the hospitals, directed the department to prepare a panel of agencies for maintenance work.

This would help in overcoming dependence on PWD which generally causes delay in undertaking repairs, officials said.

The Chief Minister also directed to install signages in the hospitals to help the patients.

The constitution of Hospital Kalyan Samitis is also being considered for better management, the officials said.

The city-government is also considering to commission its own medical general stores in hospitals on the lines of an approved Central Government scheme to facilitate availability of reliable medicines at reasonable price.

Officials said the government is also contemplating affiliation of a number of far-flung hospitals with the major hospitals in Delhi.

A number of far-flung hospitals are generally found under-utilised. The government is contemplating affiliation of such hospitals with larger hospitals, they said.

They said, to improve maintenance of the hospitals, the government was also considering creation of hospital welfare committees.
