The privately run Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre (AIMS) on Wednesday claimed that it was the only Center in Asia, where various corrective surgeries are being performed exclusively in high risk diabetic foot patients, preventing amputations.

Speaking to reporters here, Dr Harish Kumar, head of the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetic lower limb and Podiatric Surgery, AIMS, said adoption of such novel surgical techniques can result in preventing a large number of amputations, in patients with diabetic foot ulcers and deformed diabetic feet.

In diabetic patients, various deformities of the toes and feet occur due to nerve damage and poor blood supply of the foot, he said.

The re-shaping of a deformed foot or toes by surgical correction is presently done in a few select centers in U.S.A, UK, Russia and Germany, he said, adding 'these surgeries help prevent the formation of callus and ulcers of the foot and can prevent amputations in diabetics.

Various types of surgical corrections like 'SCARF surgery', 'Tendon transfer surgery', 'triple arthrodhesis', 'plate fixation' of fractured foot bones in Charcots Foot  are carried out so as to normalise the shape and function of these grossly deformed feet, he added.
