After the successful usage of unsecured Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) connections by terrorists to send terror e-mails, the Mumbai police have started to act quickly to tackle the issue of WiFi hacking.

Police are being trained to hack into unsecured WiFi connections, and will soon be making random checks in the city. If anyone is found guilty of not securing their WiFi, the police could slap a notice under section 149 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), and the Internet user may face police investigation.

“Around 80 police officers from across the city have been trained in the usage of unsecured WiFi connections and their access through laptops and mobile phones. In the first phase of this seminar, I have guided policemen on how to locate unsecured WiFi networks,” said cyber crime expert, Vijay Mukhi, who held a seminar with the police officers, along with a practical demonstration.

Mukhi added that in the second phase of the seminar, the policemen would be taught to locate WiFi connections with hacked passwords.

“We organised this seminar on the instructions of the police commissioner. It is the responsibility of the individual WiFi user to secure his connection through a password. Our men, armed with laptop and mobile phones, will make random checks at malls, multiplexes and areas where corporate offices are located, and if we find any unsecured WiFi connection, we will notify the user and warn him that his unsecured WiFi connection could be misused by criminals,” said additional commissioner of police (south region), K Venkateshan.

Venkateshan added that under section 149 of the CrPC, a notice can be issued against the person for omission — in this case, for not taking appropriate measures to secure the WiFi connection.

“Even after the notice is issued, if the WiFi connection of an individual is not secure and his connection is misused by criminals, he will have to face police investigations. People should be aware that their unsecured WiFi connection can be misused,” Venkateshan added.

The Cyber Crime Investigation Cell of the Mumbai Crime Branch will also keep a check on all public, private and government institutions, offices, schools, colleges and banks, to educate Internet users on WiFi security.
