After acupressure, acupuncture, spine therapy, physiotherapy and numerous rounds of medication and injections, it was ayurveda that brought a smile to 36-year-old Okon Blessing Daniel’s face, a citizen of Nigeria.

After being confined to a stretcher for 11 long years, Daniel feels blessed to be able to sit up again, thanks to the  treatment.

In 1997, an accident brought life to a standstill for the accountant, leaving her with fractures in the thigh and ribs. “Since then, I’ve been dependent on a wheelchair. Though I was under treatment in Nigeria, it was of little help. Doctors there were concentrating on my leg and didn't realise that I have a problem with the spinal cord too," says Daniel. She had also resorted to an indigenous form of herbal therapy.

Though recovery was slow, Daniel was able to walk and leave her crutches behind. Just then, things went from bad to worse. The year was 2001. “Around 15 dacoits attacked our house. They tried to rape me. When I resisted, they gave me two options — to get raped or have my back reduced to pieces with the butts of their guns,” recalls Daniel with a faraway look in her eyes.

She chose the latter, spending the next three to four months on drips while her condition deteriorated to an extent where she was unable to swallow anything.

Doctors in Nigeria told her that surgery was impossible. "I spent four years in Ghana under treatment. The doctors there tried everything. But the relief was only temporary," she says.

It was then that a doctor in Nigeria referred her to Mahaveer Jain Hospital in the city. After three weeks there, she was referred to Ayur Vaid, an ayurvedic hospital. "She came here diagnosed with conversion neurosis. She was completely paralysed and unable to differentiate between hot and cold sensations," elaborates Dr Belahm V Chandu, consultant, Ayur Vaid Hospital.

However, the ayurvedic therapy worked wonders. Within two weeks of treatment, she showing prominent signs of improvement. Now, she feels hot and cold sensations and does not feel jerks in her nerves. A few days ago she mistook the sound of fire crackers for gun shots, causing her nerves to jerk again. But now, she is fine with it. Her treatment comprises internal medicines prepared with herbs and minerals and various oil massages. Now, she can sit up for hours.

"Her treatment till the end of January will be  followed by 45 days of rest. This will again be followed by various therapies," says Dr Belahm. Daniel was flown to India lying on a stretcher. Now, she looks forward to making a short visit home to meet her parents and siblings.
