NEW DELHI: Four persons were arrested for allegedly kidnapping a film actor and his brother in Delhi and Mumbai simultaneously seven months ago for a ransom of Rs 25 lakh, police said on Tuesday.

Professional rivalry seems to be the reason behind the kidnap of Rakesh Kathuria, who acted in some Bhojpuri and Tamil films, in Mumbai and his brother Manish in Delhi on May 12. They were later released after paying Rs 6.5 lakh, deputy
commissioner of Police (Crime) Neeraj Thakur said on Tuesday.

Vishal Mahesh Kapoor, Kasif Khan and Rohit Singh were arrested from Mumbai while Adil Nawaj Khan was caught from Delhi following investigations into a complaint filed by Rakesh, Thakur told reporters.

Rakesh, in his complaint, had claimed that on May 12 he got a call from one Yusuf Pathan for selecting models for a fashion show. The complainant was in Mumbai for the opening ceremony of Hindi movie The Man.

As he was in Mumbai, Pathan asked Rakesh to send Manish to Connaught Place to discuss the matter besides insisting that the actor-cum-fashion designer meet his representative Gaurav Srivastava in the western metropolis.

As the brothers went to meet Pathan and Srivastava, both of them were kidnapped, Thakur said adding Manish was released later in the night to arrange for the ransom amount.

Though the kidnappers demanded Rs 25 lakh initially, the officer said, they settled for Rs 6.5 lakh, some gold jewellery, laptop and mobile phones. The brothers were released but not before the accused allegedly withdrew money using the victims' ATM cards.

After his release, Thakur said, Rakesh was so terrified that he left Mumbai within a few hours. He reported the matter to police only after being encouraged by friends.

During investigations, he claimed, it came to light that all the accused used bogus identities and had allegedly impersonated as Crime Branch officers in Delhi and ATS officers in Mumbai.

Khan, who allegedly impersonated as Sharma and kidnapped Manish, was the first to fall in the net on December 19. He told interrogators that Kapoor, who allegedly impersonated as Pathan, was the mastermind of the gang, Thakur said.

All the three others were arrested following investigations after Khan's arrest.
