MUMBAI: Tanla Solutions Ltd (TSL), the Hyderabad-based mobile content service provider, is looking to increase its domestic revenues from 3.4% now to 20% in the next two years.

It plans to use its cash reserves to fuel growth in India. A Tanla spokesperson said, “We have cash reserves of Rs 285 crore, which will be used to fund organic expansion in India. The opportunity for data services in the country is huge, especially with 3G (third-generation telecom) services being rolled out gradually by telecom providers. We aim to generate 20% of our revenues domestically in the next two years.”

The company offers mobile commerce, marketing, entertainment and internet solutions to telecom, media and digital content providers. Tantla provides 3G platform services to MTNL for the state-owned telecom provider’s recent launch of 3G services in Delhi. It has also given out its Openbit licence manager, which is used to provide mobile map and navigation services, to telcos such as Bharti Airtel and Aircel. The company is now providing a voice portal solution to BSNL.

An Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) study pegged the domestic mobile value-added services (VAS) industry at Rs 5,780 crore as of June 2008. This is expected to reach Rs 9,760 crore by June 2009, growing at a rate of 70%.

One of Tanla’s major competitor in voice services is Onmobile. “On the data services front, we don’t have any competitor in India. But firms like mBlox, Netsize and Sybase 365 are our competitors abroad,” the Tanla spokesperson said.

However, its offshoring business is a bit of a concern and has fallen from 14% in the fourth quarter of FY08 to 12.74% in the first quarter of FY09, say analysts. “We are leveraging our relationships with mobile hardware providers to increase our offshoring business. For example, with Nokia and Samsung we have signed multi-year offshoring business agreements. Under this relationship, all Nokia and Samsung smartphones will carry Openbit licence manager,” said the spokesperson.

At the end of the September quarter, the Openbit licence manager was installed on 6 million smartphone handsets.

In the September quarter, Tantla posted revenues of Rs 212.41 crore, up from Rs 168.86 crore in the June quarter. In the September quarter, products contributed 10.23%, aggregation services 70%, professional services 9.23% and mobile payments 10.56% to revenues.
