Jammu and Kashmir Police claimed to have foiled a major fidayeen attack on Tuesday, arresting three Pakistani suicide bombers of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) in a raid on a hotel in Jammu on Sunday. One of the bombers is a serving soldier of the Pakistan army.

Ghulam Farid, Mohammad Abdullah and Mohammad Imran had crossed the Indo-Bangladesh border in Khulana sector of Kolkata on December 16 and 17 and boarded a train to Jammu.

Ghulam Farid (belt No. 4319184) alias Gulshan Kumar had joined the Pakistan army in 2001 and was serving in 10 AK (Azad Kashmir) regiment. The Bhimber, PoK, resident was deputed to JeM in 2005 for carrying out fidayeen attacks in J&K. The other two militants, Mohammad Abdullah and Mohammed Imran, hail from Harpur in North West Frontier Province and Dera Nawab Shah in Bawalpur.

DGP Kuldeep Khoda said based on intelligence inputs, the police raided Hotel Samrat where the bombers had checked in as Akhilesh Prasad, Inder Kumar and Gulshan Kumar.

“They reached Dhaka from Karachi in September and were staying with Nadeem, a Punjabi-speaking handler, in Bangladesh. On December 16 and 17, they crossed the Indo-Bangladesh border and were received by a local guide who brought them to Jammu. After reaching here, they first stayed near Jammu Railway Station and later checked in at Hotel Samrat,” he said.

Khoda said the bombers were waiting for a contact person from Srinagar but he could not reach Jammu because the national highway was closed that day. “This man from Srinagar was to hand over arms and ammunition to the bombers and explain them their mission.”

The DGP said the militants were trained by Mufti Abdul Rouf, brother of JeM chief Moulana Masood Azhar.
