Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray was among the few who supported the only Emergency in the country imposed by then prime minister Indira Gandhi in June 1975. After 33 years, he has again demanded that an emergency be imposed to tackle the present situation in the country. He said the country would have to face crises as long as an "impotent" Congress ruled it.

"Who will take tough decisions until Congress is in power?" Thackeray said. "I had differences with Indira Gandhi, but she had guts. She attacked Pakistan and freed Bangladesh. It is time to show some guts. Take the half of Kashmir back from Pakistan."

Coming down heavily on Muslims, Thackeray said Muslim pockets in the country have become dens for Pakistan. "Impose emergency, do not spare anybody," he said. "Facilities to the people who are supporting Pakistan should be withdrawn immediately. Muslims have become radical because of these facilities."
