Girls are taking to cricket in Kashmir

MOHALI: Notwithstanding terrorism, girls from the volatile Kashmir valley are rubbing shoulders with boys and evincing interest in cricket by becoming integral part of training camps at Sher-e-Kashmir stadium in Kashmir.
    
Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association secretary Saleem Khan shared his view about the position of Cricket in Kashmir on the sidelines of the second Test match between India and England being played at Punjab cricket Association (PCA) stadium here.
    
"Terrorism failed to dampen the spirit of upcoming youngsters as there is a lot Cricketing activities in Kashmir too with girls not lagging behind  boys," he said.
    
Around 60 girls are part of training camps being conducted at Sher-e-Kashmir stadium and almost equal number of girls are practicing daily in Jammu, he said.
    
"Abida Khan of Srinagar and Salatiya of Jammu have recently completed their level one coaching course and are now giving training to other girls," he said.
    
Since the past 18 years the Sher-e-Kashmir stadium was in the hands of Indian army but in 2007 the association got the venue back in its control.
   
"Lot of facilities in ground, including pitch, stands, Barmuda grass have been added to the stadium," he said adding that the BCCI had also helped the Jammu and Kashmir cricket Association in improving the infrastructure.

"We have seen land in Bajalta (Jammu) where we are trying to make a new stadium. There is no lack of talent in Kashmir, Khan said.
    
Abid Nabi is the only player from Jammu and Kashmir who has played under 19 Cricket and now he exhibiting his skills in the ICL. After Abid now Sami Ullah is expected to join under 19 Cricket team, Khan said.
    
The soil for the pitch of Sher-e-Kashmir stadium is brought from Badgam. The pitch is bouncy and hard, he said.
    
Chairmain of ground and pitches committee of BCCI, Daljeet Singh had visited the Kashmir stadium and chipped in tips to make bouncy and hard pitch.
    
During winter season Cricket is shifted to Jammu from Srinagar.
