Students of Ruia College will be part of an exchange programme with an Ontario (Canadian province) consortium involving 17 universities. Six students from Ruia will get to study subjects of their choice for upto six months.

A part of Ontario-Maharashtra-Goa (OMG) Student Exchange programme, it consists of over nine institutes from Maharashtra and Goa, and 17 from Canada which include Queen’s University, York University, University of Waterloo, University of Windsor, University of Ottawa, University of Ontario Institute of Technology and University of Toronto.

“We’ll send upto six students and they will be placed according to their chosen subjects,”  said Suhas Pednekar, principal, Ruia College.

While emphasis will be on mass media, biotechnology, chemistry, biochemistry, life sciences, economics and political science, students can choose other subjects.

Ruia College has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ontario consortium. “It'll be good exposure for our students. Students from Canada will also get an opportunity to get Indian education,” he said.

“Our university system does not allow for transfer of credits. Hence we are looking at how the credits accumulated there can be converted,” said Pednekar.

Jai Hind College, which is part of the OMG programme, is selecting 15 students for the second batch. “We were the first ones to send nine final-year students in August 2008.

They are  studying in six universities. After completing a year, these students will get a certificate and a marksheet and this will be counted as their work experience,” said Kirti Narain, principal, Jai Hind College.

Selected students will get full tuition waiver there and scholarships of $2,000 (for one term) or $2,500 (for more than one term).
