LUCKNOW: Muslim clerics who assembled in Lucknow have come up with a solution to contain terrorism. In a resolution passed at the Ittehad Millat Convention organised here, the clerics stated that the blot of “Islamic” terrorism would have to be removed by Muslims themselves.

It called for a three-pronged approach — social, religious and political — and the unity of all different Muslim sects to achieve this end. Another unique aspect of the convention was the ‘namaz’ offered by top Shia clerics under the leadership of a Sunni Imam.

“This is the beginning of the ‘ittehad’ [unity of all Mohammedan sects] we are talking about,” said Siraj Mehdi, president of the organisation. “This is the right time and opportunity for all sects to unite. We will have to forget about Deobandi, Barelvi, Wahabi, Shia or Sunni and act as one body against the scourge of terrorism. We will have to stop terrorist outfits from using our children for their murderous plots in the name of Islam,” he asserted.

Islamic scholars at the convention said innocent Muslim youths were being misguided in the name of their religion and were being used for a so-called “jihad” which was nothing but downright terrorism.

Revered Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Sadiq, vice-president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), lambasted the US for “provoking” terrorist acts.
“Those who attacked Mumbai are small-time operators. America is the biggest culprit responsible for terrorism throughout the world,” he said. He praised the Iraqi journalist who had hurled shoes at US president George Bush in Baghdad recently.

Maulana Sadiq called for setting up an All India Muslim Education Personal Law Board to ensure better education and prospects for the Muslims. “Children who are educated and who have a good future to look forward to will never get indoctrinated by terrorist outfits,” he said.

Prominent advocate Zafaryab Jilani, member of the AIMPLB who is handling the Babri Masjid case, asked: “All Muslims are one when it comes to matters like the Babri Masjid or the Shah Bano case. Then why are we divided into different sects?”
