ISLAMABAD: US senatory said that Pakistan would have to show India that it is taking action against suspected terrorists operating from its soil, and that New Delhi could not be satisfied merely by words.

“It (India) has to be shown some action,” The News quoted Kerry as saying at a news conference after talks with the Pakistani leadership.

He said Pakistan had made a choice to be part of civilized behavior, and added that the United States is committed to helping Pakistan economically and in other areas, “but there has to be a clear understanding of the rules.”

Earlier, Pakistan prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said that his country wanted to have cordial and friendly relations with all neighbors.

He told Kerry that Islamabad neither harbored any aggressive designs against India nor would it allow any individual or entity on its territory to harm bilateral ties between the two countries through their activities.

Gilani said that Pakistan remained committed to the composite dialogue process with India and wished to resolve all outstanding issues with New Delhi amicably.

He briefed Kerry in detail on Pakistan’s initiatives to help investigate the Mumbai incidents and normalise the situation with India.

Kerry urged both sides to change their mindset and sit together to cooperate with each other in the ongoing investigations.

Foreign minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi, adviser to PM on National Security Major General (retired) Mehmud Ali Durrani and the foreign affairs, interior and defence secretaries besides US ambassador to Pakistan, Anne W Patterson attended the meeting.
