While St Xavier’s College prepares to celebrate its 140th anniversary in 2009, it entered into collaboration with Liverpool Hope University (UK). The two institutes signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Monday to establish an ‘Institute for Research on Education and Society’ for collaborative research projects.

“Education has to come up with answers to solve the ills afflicting society. This institute will enable the faculty to do research projects which are inter-cultural in nature,” said St Xavier’s College principal Father Frazer Mascarenhas.

The institute, which will have offices both at St Xavier’s and Liverpool Hope, will focus on ‘hard research’ and issues affecting society. Students may also be involved in some of the projects.

“It’ll facilitate internationalisation of research and good education. It’s our first association with an institute in Mumbai and the third in India,” said G Pillay, vice-chancellor, Liverpool Hope.

Meanwhile, the year-long anniversary celebrations will begin with an inaugural event for the alumni on January 3. Several distinguished alumni will be felicitated including a posthumous award for late ACP Ashok Kamte, who was killed in the terror attack.

“In keeping with the diversity that is embodied by our faculty and students and the opportunities that the college offers, our theme will be celebrating diversity,” said Mascarenhas.

“We are in contact with 6,000 alumni. That’s why we decided to dedicate our celebrations to them so that the interface can be strengthened,” he added. Events like
Malhar and Ithaka will see alumni participation also.
