The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has written to the public prosecutor’s office in the sessions court seeking documents required for the extradition of Rahil Shaikh, one of the accused in 2006 serial blasts case. The ATS confirmed that he had been arrested by the Interpol in London last month.

Rahil Shaikh, brother of the other accused Faizal and Muzammil Shaikh, is believed to have organised funds for the 2006 Mumbai terror operation that left 187 people dead and hundreds injured. He is also believed to have trained the other accused in communications .

According to police sources, Shaikh was tracked down by the UK police in Birmingham on the basis of a red corner notice issued against him. The UK government then alerted the Central Bureau of Investigation on November 10, which in turn asked the Mumbai Police on November 14 to prepare a dossier on Shaikh.

“The UK police found Shaikh and recovered his passport. We believe the passport is genuine because he was sent to Birmingham for official work by his Pune-based software company, Zensar Technologies,” said the investigating office, Sadashiv Patil.
Patil submitted a letter in the public prosecutor’s office on Monday seeking certified copies of the chargesheet, sanction order for invocation of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act in the case, confession copies of the accused, statements of witnesses, non-bailable warrant and proclamation order issued by the trial court on Shaikh.

“These copies will be sent to London for the extradition proceedings there,” said KP Raghuvanshi, joint commissioner of police, ATS.

According to the ATS, Shaikh was in touch with another absconding accused, Rizwan Daware, who was instrumental in sending funds to Faizal through hawala.
Shaikh was the link between Faisal and Lashkar-e-Tayiba commander Azam Cheema. Cheema, who is wanted by police in India, had organised a training camp for the blasts accused in Bahawalpur, Pakistan, said the ATS officer.

The trial in the case has been stayed by the Supreme Court following a petition filed by the accused claiming that they were wrongfully arrested under the MCOCA.
