The Mumbai crime branch has recovered a diary from the fishing trawler, Kuber, which was used by the terrorists responsible for the 26/11 attack on the city. The diary, written in Urdu, contains details of the duties assigned to the 10 terrorists, while sailing on the waters before reaching the Mumbai coast.

Denying the theory that there were more than 10 terrorists who landed in the city for the attack, joint commissioner of police, crime, Rakesh Maria said, “The dairy we found on the fishing trawler clearly mentions the names of the 10 militants and the duties they were supposed to perform.” The duty distribution diary mentioned the tasks of the militants from the time they set sail.

According to Maria, the diary stated that two terrorists were to work on two-hour shifts, while the others had to rest in the boat. “One of the several tasks was to guard the watchtower and check if the coast guard or navy was approaching. Secondly, one of the terrorists was assigned to constantly watch Amarchand Solanki, the skipper of Kuber,” said Maria, adding that the terrorists feared that Solanki would signal or try to catch the eye of sailors in other boats.

Maria said that the dinghy terrorists used after leaving Kuber was a brand new one.

“They had coloured it shabbily so that it looked old and did not attract unwanted attention,” he said adding that the dinghy was transferred from the Pakistani mother ship Al-Husseini to Kuber.

The police have so far said that nine terrorists were killed — four at the Taj, two each at Oberoi and the Nariman House and one in Girgaum — and one was captured alive.

However, the recovery of 15 blankets and winter jackets had perplexed investigators and raised suspicions that there could have been more terrorists who arrived in the city using the sea route. To this Maria said, “One person can use two blankets at a time.

The number of blankets and winter jackets is not a criterion to determine the actual number of terrorists.”
