LONDON: Liverpool beat Blackburn Rovers 3-1 at Ewood Park on Saturday to stay top of the Premier League and increase the pressure on Rovers manager Paul Ince whose team have now gone 10 league matches without a win. Xabi Alonso scored the breakthrough goal after 69 minutes before Yossi Benayoun added a second and Steven Gerrard scored a late third to take Liverpool on to 37 points from 16 matches. Roque Santa Cruz scored for Rovers four minutes from time.

Chelsea, one point behind, won 2-0 at Bolton Wanderers with goals from former Bolton striker Nicolas Anelka and a spectacular bicycle kick from Deco. The victory was Chelsea’s 11th successive away win, eclipsing the record of 10 straight away wins set by Tottenham Hotspur in 1960. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Adebayor gave Arsenal a 1-0 victory over Wigan to maintain the Gunners’ Premier League title chances on Saturday as Cesc Fabregas made it three wins in a row as captain. The tall striker fired the only goal in the 16th minute at Emirates Stadium, where Arsenal twice hit the post but far from dominated Steve Bruce’s Wigan. When Wigan striker Emile Heskey headed over the bar near the end, the anxious Gunners fans were yelling at manager Arsene Wenger to take off Emmanual Eboue, who had made several errors after coming on as a first half substitute for the injured Samir Nasri. Fans had been booing Eboue, and greeted the substitution with huge cheers.

In an early kick off, Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw at Fulham as Jimmy Bullard cancelled out Benjani Mwaruwari’s opener for the visitors on Saturday.

Zimbabwe forward Benjani had put City ahead early in the first half at Craven Cottage but Bullard equalised before the break and

Fulham were the stronger side after that. City have won just once in their last seven matches and remain dangerously close to the  relegation zone despite manager Mark Hughes’s multi-million pound spending spree in pre-season.
