MUMBAI: A double strike in the third over of the day by Dhawal Kulkarni sealed
Hyderabad’s fate in their fifth round Super League match against former champions Mumbai at BKC Stadium on Friday. The visitors were bowled out for 243 runs, 42 minutes precisely before lunch.
Resuming the day at 166 for 4, Hyderabad were 170-7 in less than 20 minutes. Overnight centurion DB Ravi Teja was Kulkarni’s first victim. Kulkarni used the early morning breeze to good effect with a delivery swung in only to move away after pitching. The dashing batsman could not add a single run to his overnight score of 107.
Kulkarni then sent Abdul Quadri’s off-stump for a stroll. The 19-year-old was in no mood to relent. In his next over he sent MP Arjun back, caught by Wasim
Jaffer in the slips. A few overs later, SM Shoaib was well caught by Ajinkya Rahane in gully to give the pacer his sixth wicket.
Abhinav Kumar and Ashwin Yadav provided some resistance but Kulkarni cut short their partnership by forcing an edge from Kumar. It gave Jaffer his fifth catch of the match.
Soon, Ashwin Yadav perished trying to clear Bahutule over long off. Kulkarni, who debuted for Mumbai this season, finished the match with career best figures of 9 for 86. “I worked on to convert my initial breakthroughs in to sustained attack, which I did in
this match,” said Kulkarni.
Skipper Jaffer was surprised that the game got over so soon. “Scoring 600 runs in the first innings and then some brilliant spells by Powar followed by Kulkarni made it look like a perfect script,” said Jaffer after winning the match. Mumbai now top the Group A table with 21 points in five games and are virtually assured of a quarterfinal spot.
