CHANDIGARH: There’s been palpable movement of forces on both sides of the Indo-Pak border in the wake of the Mumbai terrorist attack. The Indian army is quietly but definitely getting into action mode.

Sources attributed the preparedness to the “heightened activity” of the Pakistan army along the border.

They said the “re-positioning” of troops along the border was largely in response to the resurgence of Pakistan army activities.

“The Pakistan army is shoring up ammunition and stocking up ration, and the Indian army has taken the cue,” a senior officer said.

He denied the scale of preparedness was as high as in the aftermath of the attack on parliament, but “yes, there is active stirring of forces”.

Increased reconnaissance visits by senior Pakistan army officers along the border in Punjab, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir has put the Indian army on high alert, the officer said.

Sources said the Pakistan army had activated its artillery guns. The guns are being moved and the time required for their moving and re-assembling is being monitored, they said.

On the Indian side, the army has suspended all training programmes, and drills that need actual field practice are being enforced. All men at training programmes are being moved back to their regiments, the officer said.

On the Pakistani side, sources said, more ammunition was being drawn. Technically, it means personal arms of the men are being augmented, while senior officers have been touring sensitive sectors along the border.

Major activity has been reported from Lahore and Kasur that border Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Ferozepore in Punjab. The Indian army too has geared up.
