ROURKELA (Orissa): In a novel gesture, an alleged rapist was granted interim bail by a local court to facilitate his marriage with the victim in Sudergardh district of Orissa on Wednesday.

District Sessions Judge Bhagirathi Panda granted the month-long bail to one of the two alleged rapists Birsingh Munda to enable him marry the 20-year-old victim, after considering his bail application along with a court affidavit.

Birsingh Munda (20) and Landu Munda (23) had allegedly gangraped the girl on June 14, 2007 at Tikayatpalli village, while she was returning to her village Baliguda after attending a tribal festival.

Bail applications of both were rejected by the court earlier.

The court after receiving consent from the girl and the accused, granted bail as families of both sides prayed that the marriage ceremony be solemnised outside jail as per their tribal tradition.
