Bollywood blockbuster Jodhaa Akbar is being regarded as a strong contender for this year’s Bafta Awards. The period drama staring Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan is competing in the Best Foreign Film Category and critics believe it has a very good chance of winning. Not a stranger to winning foreign film awards, Jodhaa Akbar has already won the Audience Award of the Best Foreign Feature Film at the 32nd Sao Paulo International Film Festival in Brazil, and the Grand Prix Award for Best Film and Best Actor at the Golden Minbar Film Festival in Kazan, Russia, but winning a Bafta would definitely be more prestigious.

The Baftas are the British version of the Oscars, and the epic story of Emperor Akbar and his wife Jodhaabai is the first Indian film to compete for a Bafta Award since Rang de Basanti was nominated for ‘Film Not In The English Language’ in 2006. Director Ashutosh Gowariker seems to be making a habit of only producing films which are nominated for top awards.

His previous film Lagaan was nominated for an Oscar in 2001 as Best Foreign Language Film. Jodha Akbar was a huge success in the US, grossing $3.4 million as the second biggest Indian film ever, and more than a £1 million in the UK when it was released in February. Final nominations for the Bafta awards will be announced on 15 January. Winners will be announced at the Bafta Awards on Sunday 8 February, 2009, at the Royal Opera House in London.

An Indian model-cum-journalist has written an ultimate guide to beauty for South Asian women. Billed as a “one-of-a-kind dressing table guide containing everything a girl needs to look and feel her best”, Anjana Gosai’s book has the unimaginative name of The Ultimate Guide to Beauty. Gosai is currently the beauty editor with a glossy women’s magazine called Asian. She has been working as a health and beauty journalist for over eight years, contributing to publications including The Daily Mail, Daily Express, Elle, Sunday Times Style and Harper’s Bazaar.

“Whether it’s lipstick junkies searching for the perfect shade or confused brides-to-be unsure about their look for the big day, the Ultimate Guide to Beauty has the answers,” says the beautiful author. The book features advice from leading hairdressers, skincare gurus, make-up artists from around the world, including Bollywood make-up maestros, as well as photography of trend-setting looks featuring some of India’s leading supermodels such as Ujjwala Raut, Sheetal Mallar, Indrani Das Gupta, Tinu Verghese and Upen Patel. It also contains a round up of classic and contemporary Bollywood beauty looks from the last 50 years, and a global beauty directory — so readers can choose where to have their beauty treatments all over the world.
