MUMBAI: With the battles for the Oberoi and Nariman House ending, one question is still haunting the city: how many terrorists had come in the first place and how many of them are still on the loose?

While Azam Amir Qasab, the terrorist who was captured at Girgaum Chowpatty on Wednesday, has told the police that he was part of a group of 15 highly trained terrorists who entered the city that day by sea, some reports and police officers have said that the total number involved in the operation could be as much as 40. No independent confirmation of the figure was available.

On Friday, deputy chief minister RR Patil claimed that nine terrorists had been slain and two could be in the Taj. According to the police count, five terrorists had been killed while two or three were still in the Taj.

But both counts left a worrying three to six terrorists unaccounted for, a large enough number to cause worry for citizens and the security apparatus.
