While the 1983 batch of IIT Bombay is getting ready to catch up with old friends in December, the former students have also decided to give back to their alma mater by helping the institute attract and retain world-class faculty through their legacy project.

The aim of the project, titled Gurudakshina, is to enhance the institute’s brand and strengthen programmes related to faculty.

“The 1983 batch legacy project is designed to enable the alumni to invest in their alma mater through the present and future IIT Bombay faculty,” said former student of electrical engineering from the batch, Shridhar Shukla. He said details are being developed.

Registrations are on for the silver jubilee reunion of the batch, which is scheduled to be held on December 27 and 28. The 1983 batch had approximately 250 BTech students and 400 others in various postgraduate programmes.

“At a time when all IITs are facing a faculty shortage and finding innovative ways to tide over the problem, such contributions from the alumni will be helpful,” said Milind Gokhale, former CEO of the IIT Bombay Alumni Association (IITBAA) and an elected director on the association board.

“The number of faculty members required, keeping in mind the increase in intake over the next few years, is quite huge. Contributions by alumni will help to some extent,” he said.

The plans of the batch include raising funds for supporting two projects — one for helping the institute to recruit new faculty and the other for recognising the achievements of existing faculty. This includes supporting the Young Faculty Fund — Project Signing Bonus, which was launched by the 1982 batch to give a sign-on bonus (Rs3 lakh in instalments) to newly hired faculty members.

Again, while IIT Bombay currently gives away research and teaching rewards annually to faculty members in recognition of their achievements, the second project of the 1983 batch is aimed at sustaining similar projects to encourage the existing faculty members who excel in teaching and research activities.

The 1983 batch intends to fund both the schemes equally.
