BANGALORE: The BJP Government of Karnataka has ticked two of its top poll promises with the sanctioning of Rs.200 Crore for refurbishing the historic ruins at Hampi and initiating steps for establishing a Sanskrit University.

It was the Tourism Minister G Janardhan Reddy who announced the government decision for Hampi's development while Minister for Higher Education Arvind Limbavali revealed on Thursday the government's intention to set up the state's first Sanskrit University. The proposed Sanskrit University will undertake research on topics related to spiritual, religious and cultural fields besides inculcating moral values among the youth, the Minister said.

Reddy said at Bellary the Centre too has promised Rs 80 crore for the protection and preservation of monuments, and for further excavation to unearth more treasures hidden beneath. Hampi is located within the ruins of Vijayanagara, the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. It was in the news not long ago after vandals encroached on the heritage sites and damaged precious monuments.

The Government has also identified around 250 acres in Hampi where hotels of different denominations and an amusement park will come up.
Reddy said that a zoo on the lines of the one in Singapore would be developed at Daroji bear sanctuary near Hampi.

It was the BJP government's dream to conduct year-long festivities in 2009 to mark 500 years of Krishnadevaraya's rule. This would be realised. Part of the fund would be utilised to redo the roads leading to Hampi. The BJP leaders accused the successive Congress and JD(S) governments of  neglecting Hampi  which is visited by thousands of tourists from inland and overseas countries.
