MUMBAI: When Naveen Shawn Sridhar is not busy making programs for satellites on US defence projects, one is most likely to find him at the local basketball courts around Berkeley, California.

The 26-year-old works as an engineer for Lockheed Martin, a multinational aerospace manufacturing company, and manages a side-career as a professional basketball player. “I don’t know which is elemental to me — basketball or engineering — though I would like to think it’s basketball,” Naveen said on the sidelines of the Savio Cup All India Basketball Tournament in Mumbai, where he is a part of ‘Shooting for Success’, a San Antonio-based team that is participating in the contest.

For Naveen, coming to India is stepping on familiar grounds. Though born and brought up in America, Naveen connects with this country as his parents are from India. “My mom’s from Goa so I have been there a few times and my dad comes from Coimbatore,” he said.

Naveen picked up the game when he was a five and continued playing through high school. “I was passionate about the game from day one. But studies always came first for me,” he said. Being an Indian overseas has its share of disputes and when you try playing their game, it’s more so.

“I used to get snubbed at initially when I took up the game. I am an Indian, how am I supposed to play an American sport better than the Americans?” Naveen said adding, “However, once I got more involved, it was my game that mattered and not my race.”
Naveen is currently part of two professional teams — San Francisco Rumble and KPS Travelling Team.
