CHENNAI: Slamming police for their "inaction" during a clash between two student groups at the Dr Ambedkar Government Law College here, AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa on Thursday demanded that Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who holds the home portfolio, resign owning moral responsibility.

"All police personnel who stood inactive while patrolling outside the campus during the clash should be dismissed and a thorough inquiry should also be conducted," she said in a statement here.

She also demanded that the government immediately provide medical attention to the injured students and pay them adequate compensation.

Jayalalithaa said she was shocked to see visuals of the violence unleashed by students of a particular caste against those of another caste in front of police personnel, "who remained mute onlookers."

She said incidents like the present one and the attack on Tamil daily 'Dinakaran' in Madurai last year gave rise to the suspicion that police had been "ordered" to remain mere spectators under such circumstances.

Meanwhile, the CPI-M and CPI also expressed shock over the incident and demanded immediate action against those responsible.

"In future, the government should take adequate steps to prevent such clashes and create a cordial atmosphere among students", CPI-M State Secretary N Varadarajan said in a statement here.

He said there had been some disputes among students of different communities in the college in the past few days. "Knowing this fact, why did the college authorities fail to defuse the tension before the clash took place?" he asked.

In a separate statement, CPI State Secretary D Pandiyan also sought to know why police had remained 'inactive' during the clash and demanded to know the real reason behind the incident.
