KOLKATA: Communist Party of India (Marxist) members Suhrid Dutta and Debu Malik, who were convicted on Tuesday for the brutal murder of Singur teenager Tapasi Malik in 2006, were sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday by a trial court at Chandannagar in Hooghly district.
The court, however, made it clear it was not a political murder but personal vendetta.
The counsel for Dutta, a former Singur zonal committee secretary of the CPI(M), and party worker Malik said the convicts will soon move the Calcutta high court against the trial court order.
Meanwhile, Central Bureau of Investigation counsel Partho Tapaswi said Dutta and Malik had been charged under sections 302 (murder), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 210 (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
Tapasi’s parents expressed satisfaction over the judgment, saying they were relieved that the culprits has been punished.
