AHMEDABAD: Like many investors, Srikant Nair (name changed), has been thrust on the cycle of doom and boom, but the doom is all his; companies that make anti-depressants are enjoying a 30% boom. The figure accounts for a sale surge in Gujarat over just one month.

Nair is being crushed by the noticeable side-effects of the meltdown, insomnia and despair. He is washed out financially, owes Rs25 lakh to debtors, and has had to even sell his car that his five-year-old son adored.

When Nair consults a psychiatrist, he joins a throng of stock-market players who need sleeping pills and anxiety-busting medication.

The president of the Gujarat Chemists and Druggists Association, Jashwant Patel, said, “There has been a rise in the sale of anti-depressants by around 20-25% in the city, and by about 30% in the state.”

The executive secretary of Indian Drug Manufacturing Association-Gujarat State Board, RS Joshi, said the sale of sleeping pills had also risen by over 5%. As for anti-depressants, Surat ranks second in the sales-figure standings followed by smaller cities in the state. Patel said the figures suggested the effect of the market crash was most evident in Ahmedabad and Surat.

“We come across many cases in which patients are depressed because of the losses incurred in the stock market,” said Dr Hemang Desai, an Ahmedabad-based psychiatrist. “Also, there are those who have tried to commit suicide.” In such cases, after examination and assessment, doctors prescribe anti-depressants and counselling, Desai said.

Dr Murgesh Vaishnav, another Ahmedabad-based psychiatrist, said “the bearish trend in the stock market has doubled the patient flow” and to control patient anxiety anti-depressants are recommended. “This will bring the patient under control and recovery is quick,” Vaishnav said.

Stock market victims also suffer from several physical ailments, such as gastric problems and high blood pressure. Cardiac problems are also common among those who suffer from stress.
